Mokena, IL – Mokena Police confirmed that a juvenile suffered burn injuries Thursday night after a small fire accident in a wooded area near the 16000 block of 191st Street.

According to the Mokena Police Department, officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to Silver Cross Hospital after receiving a report that a male juvenile had been attacked and set on fire. Upon investigation, officers determined that the report was unfounded.

Police said the incident actually involved a group of juveniles who had started a small fire in a wooded area when one of them was accidentally burned. The injured juvenile sustained burns to his legs and was treated at the hospital.

Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing safety threat to the community. “Parents, please teach your children fire is not a toy; it is a dangerous tool that can cause serious injury or death and should only be used by adults,” the department wrote in a community update.

Mokena Police said the matter serves as a safety reminder for families as cooler weather brings more outdoor activities and campfires.
