Mokena, IL – As Domestic Violence Awareness Month comes to a close, the Mokena Police Department is reminding residents that awareness and community support remain critical year-round.

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 9.4% of high school students nationwide report being physically hurt by a dating partner. Police say education and early prevention are key to protecting youth and families across the region.

To continue supporting survivors, Mokena police are promoting a donation drive benefiting Guardian Angel Community Services, a Will County–based nonprofit providing crisis intervention, shelter, and advocacy programs.

Immediate needs include gift cards (Amazon, ALDI, Walmart, gas stations), pots and pans, shampoo, conditioner, paper towels, dish soap, and clothing items such as joggers, sports bras, and underwear for women. Donations of new and unused items only are accepted.

E-gift cards can be emailed to vmuersch@gacsprograms.org, and physical donations can be arranged directly through the organization. More details, including an Amazon Wish List, are available via Guardian Angel Community Services’ website.

“Awareness and education help prevent abuse before it starts,” the department noted, thanking residents who have already supported this month’s effort.
