Mojave, CA – Drivers along key desert highways face dangerous crosswinds through Friday morning as wind gusts up to 60 mph continue to sweep across Kern County, threatening travel safety and power lines.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until noon Friday for the Mojave Desert Slopes. Sustained northwest winds between 25 and 35 mph will continue, with stronger gusts capable of toppling trees and damaging power infrastructure.

Highways 58, 14, 178, and U.S. 395 are especially vulnerable, where strong crosswinds could push vehicles out of lanes, particularly high-profile trucks and RVs. Blowing debris and sudden gusts may also reduce visibility at times during the morning hours.

Communities around Mojave will experience the strongest impacts through the late morning, with conditions gradually easing after midday. Emergency officials warn that unsecured outdoor items could become airborne.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel, keep both hands on the wheel, and remain alert for sudden gusts. Residents are urged to stay indoors and away from windows. The warning remains in effect until noon Friday, with conditions expected to improve afterward.
