Bakersfield, California – Travel along the Mojave Desert slopes could become dangerous by late Wednesday morning as powerful winds increase, with gusts strong enough to overturn high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday through noon Friday for eastern Kern County. Sustained west winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph.
Areas along major routes through the Mojave Desert, including highways connecting Bakersfield to Ridgecrest and beyond, will face the greatest impacts. Strong crosswinds may make driving difficult, especially for trucks, trailers, and RVs. Blowing dust could also reduce visibility at times, creating sudden hazardous conditions.
The strongest winds are expected during the afternoon and evening hours, when gusts peak and road conditions become most dangerous.
Drivers are urged to avoid travel if possible in exposed desert areas, keep both hands on the wheel, and be prepared for sudden gusts. High-profile vehicles should use extreme caution or delay travel.
The wind threat will persist through Friday morning, with additional advisories possible if conditions intensify.
