Albany, NY – Lake effect snow is expected to impact parts of eastern New York and western New England today, bringing light to locally moderate snowfall, gusty winds, and reduced visibility, especially in areas west and north of the Capital Region.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, lake effect snow began early this morning in the wake of a cold front and is expected to continue through late this evening. The highest snowfall totals are forecast for the Southwest Adirondacks and the western Mohawk Valley, where 2 to 4 inches of snow are likely.

Farther east, the far-inland reach of the primary lake effect band may bring light accumulations to portions of the Capital District, including sections of the Northway (I-87) later this afternoon. While totals there should remain lighter, slick roads and brief reductions in visibility are possible.

Forecasters warn that gusty winds combined with moderate to heavy snowfall rates could cause patches of blowing snow, particularly in the western Mohawk Valley and areas north of or along Interstate 90. During heavier snow bursts, visibility could drop quickly, making travel hazardous.

The snow event is expected to be relatively short-lived, with activity tapering off later tonight as lake effect bands weaken and shift north. No formal winter storm warnings are currently in effect, though Special Weather Statements may be issued if conditions worsen.

Drivers traveling through Herkimer County, Hamilton County, Fulton County, and along major routes including I-90 and I-87 are urged to use caution, slow down, and allow extra travel time.
