Syracuse, New York – Drivers across Central New York could see roads quickly turn snow-covered Wednesday afternoon as lake effect bands intensify and persist into early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday for Onondaga, Madison, Northern and Southern Oneida, Cortland, Tompkins and Southern Cayuga counties. Total snowfall of 2 to 6 inches is expected, with the most intense lake effect snow developing Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Wednesday night.

In Syracuse, Rome and Utica, bursts of heavier snow may reduce visibility and coat stretches of Interstate 81 and the New York State Thruway with fresh accumulation. Farther south, Ithaca, Cortland and Auburn will also see periodic snow showers, especially during the evening commute.

Lake effect bands can shift quickly, leading to rapid changes in road conditions over short distances. Untreated secondary roads and overpasses may become slick first.

Motorists should slow down, increase following distance and check 511NY for real-time updates before traveling. Snow showers will gradually weaken early Thursday morning, but slippery spots may linger for the Thursday commute as temperatures stay below freezing. Additional advisories could be issued if bands redevelop or intensify.
