Philadelphia, Pa. – Moderate flooding is likely across eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware through tonight, as heavy thunderstorms drop up to 5 inches of rain in a short span.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Moderate Risk (Level 3 of 4) of excessive rainfall is in effect through Monday evening, with the greatest flash flood potential in the Philadelphia metro, Reading, Allentown, and Trenton areas. The alert expands a previously issued Flood Watch, warning of locally intense rainfall exceeding 2 inches per hour.
Urbanized zones, poor drainage areas, and small streams are most vulnerable to flash flooding. Roads such as I-95, the Schuylkill Expressway, and Route 1 could see rapid ponding or closures. Thunderstorms may also bring isolated damaging winds, but flash flooding remains the primary threat.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and monitor alerts throughout the day. Emergency crews stress: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Keep phones charged, avoid unnecessary travel, and check in with local emergency management for real-time updates.
Rain chances will continue throughout the week, with more showers and storms expected. Additional flood alerts may be issued.
