Springfield, MO – A surge of arctic air will grip southwest Missouri this weekend, bringing frigid temperatures and wind chills below zero. Residents along Highway 65 and surrounding areas should prepare for dangerous cold starting Saturday, with conditions expected to persist into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a chance of rain late Friday will give way to snow flurries by Saturday morning, with high temperatures plummeting to 28 degrees. Wind gusts up to 29 mph will make it feel much colder, with wind chill values as low as 10 degrees during the day. Overnight lows on Saturday will drop to 13 degrees, with subzero wind chills expected.
Sunday and Monday will remain bitterly cold, with highs ranging from 15 to 25 degrees and nighttime lows near single digits. The coldest wind chill values, between -5 and 10 degrees, are forecast for early mornings. By Tuesday, temperatures will start to moderate slightly but will remain below freezing.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions, including covering exposed skin, dressing in layers, and keeping pets indoors. Drivers should exercise caution as slick conditions could develop on untreated roads.
Looking ahead, the extended forecast predicts a slow warm-up starting Wednesday, with highs near 35 degrees. However, another cold front may bring more wintry weather by late next week.
