Kansas City, Missouri – Drivers across western Missouri could see rapidly changing weather conditions Sunday as a powerful storm system moves through, bringing thunderstorms followed by strong winds and sharply colder air overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop near a strong cold front Sunday as it sweeps across the region. Behind the front, powerful northwest winds will strengthen through Sunday evening, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph across communities including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Maryville, and Lee’s Summit.

These strong winds could make travel difficult along major corridors such as Interstate 29, Interstate 35, and Interstate 70, particularly for trucks, buses, and other high-profile vehicles.

As colder air surges in Sunday night, precipitation may briefly transition from rain to light snow before ending, though little accumulation is expected. The bigger impact will be the temperature drop and continued strong winds.

By early Monday morning, wind chills could fall below zero across northern Missouri, especially near Maryville, Kirksville, and St. Joseph as gusty northwest winds continue.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for rapidly falling temperatures overnight. Gusty winds will persist into Monday before gradually easing later in the day.
