Springfield, Mo. – Dangerous heat will grip southwest Missouri through Tuesday as afternoon highs climb into the upper 90s and near 100°, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors. Relief may finally arrive midweek as scattered storms bring slightly cooler air.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, daily rain chances continue with the best opportunity for widespread showers and thunderstorms Tuesday into Wednesday. Heat index values could push past 100° Monday afternoon, making hydration and limited outdoor exposure critical.

Communities across Greene, Christian, and Webster counties may see isolated strong storms Tuesday evening, which could bring brief downpours, gusty winds, and lightning. Travelers along I-44 from Springfield to Joplin should prepare for sudden reduced visibility during passing storms.

Residents are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, seek shaded areas when possible, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles. With storms possible into Wednesday, power outages and brief flooding in low-lying spots cannot be ruled out.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-80s by Thursday, bringing a break from the oppressive heat. Additional updates and advisories may be issued if storm activity intensifies.
