Springfield, MO – Residents across southeast Kansas and western Missouri should prepare for severe thunderstorms moving into the region Tuesday, with the greatest risk unfolding throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storms will begin near sunrise with the primary threat being damaging straight-line winds. Gusts may reach up to 60 miles per hour, creating hazardous travel conditions and the potential for power outages.
By afternoon, forecasters warn that large hail, up to the size of quarters, may accompany the storms. The threat of tornadoes is also elevated, particularly in extreme southwest Missouri, where conditions are most favorable for rotation later in the day.
Communities including Joplin, Springfield, and Branson fall within the outlined risk area, with neighboring cities across southeast Kansas such as Pittsburg and Chanute also affected. The system is expected to continue eastward into Tuesday evening, keeping the risk for severe weather active until late night hours.
The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor weather alerts, secure outdoor items, and review severe weather safety plans. Drivers are encouraged to use caution on highways including I-44 and Highway 65, where strong winds and heavy rain may quickly reduce visibility.
