St. Louis, Missouri – Strong thunderstorms could rattle the Missouri-Illinois border this afternoon, as a cold front rolls in and triggers damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the best window for severe storms stretches from 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, with the most intense activity likely along and east of the Mississippi River. Isolated 60 mph wind gusts and torrential rain are the primary hazards, though not every area will see severe weather.

St. Louis, Belleville, Alton, and surrounding metro areas may experience numerous thunderstorms, especially closer to sunset. These storms are expected to bring down limbs, cause brief power outages, and create hazardous driving conditions on I-64, I-55, and I-44. While hail and tornadoes are not a primary concern, residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours.

Today’s storms mark the arrival of a cooler air mass, which will end the region’s streak of dangerously hot weather.

Storm activity should taper by late evening, but more alerts may be issued if storm intensity increases.
