St. Joseph, Missouri – Drivers across northwest Missouri and far northeast Kansas could face slick roads by late Sunday afternoon as a mix of snow and ice spreads into the region ahead of the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 3 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday for portions of northwest and north central Missouri, including Buchanan, Clinton, Caldwell and Nodaway counties, as well as Atchison and Doniphan counties in Kansas. Forecasters expect up to one inch of snow along with ice accumulations reaching one-tenth of an inch.
Even a thin layer of ice can create dangerous travel, especially on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses. Communities including St. Joseph, Maryville, Bethany, Cameron and Maysville may see road conditions deteriorate Sunday evening as temperatures slip toward freezing.
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will monitor highways, but officials urge drivers to slow down and allow extra time. In Missouri, travelers can check conditions at traveler.modot.org, while Kansas drivers can call 511 for updates. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles and avoid unnecessary overnight travel if possible.
Conditions should gradually improve after mid-morning Monday as precipitation tapers, though slick spots may linger in shaded areas.
