Columbia, Mo. – A line of dangerous thunderstorms could bring 60 mph wind gusts, large hail, and frequent lightning to much of Missouri Sunday afternoon and evening, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 45 counties, including St. Louis, Jefferson City, Springfield, and Columbia, until 10 p.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 395 was issued at 2:30 p.m. CDT and remains in effect through the evening. The threat zone covers a wide stretch from St. Charles and St. Louis Counties in the east to Jasper and Vernon in the west, with central Missouri communities like Boone, Cole, and Camden also at risk.
Cities including St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Springfield may see downed trees, localized power outages, and dangerous road conditions due to wind-blown debris. Motorists are urged to avoid travel during strong storm cells, especially along Interstates 44, 70, and 55, where visibility could drop quickly.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, charge mobile devices, and stay tuned to local weather alerts. If warnings are issued later tonight, seek shelter immediately and avoid windows.
This storm system could trigger additional warnings into the evening. The NWS advises staying weather-aware until the watch expires at 10 p.m., with more rounds of storms possible into Monday.
