Springfield, MO – Patchy fog and freezing temperatures are expected across southern Missouri tonight, impacting visibility along key roadways, particularly I-44. Drivers should prepare for challenging travel conditions, with visibility reduced to less than a mile in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, fog will develop tonight and persist into early Thursday morning. Temperatures will dip into the upper 20s, creating a risk for freezing fog and slick surfaces. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions during the morning commute.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring sunny skies and a high near 53 degrees, offering brief relief from the cold. However, wind chills will plummet Thursday night, dropping to as low as 13 degrees with a low temperature of 23. Friday is forecast to be sunny but much colder, with highs struggling to reach 35 degrees.
The weekend will remain clear but frigid, with lows in the mid-20s Saturday night and daytime highs near 43 on Saturday and 48 on Sunday. Those planning outdoor activities should bundle up and take precautions against wind chill.
The National Weather Service also warns that hazardous weather may persist into next week, with scattered showers expected Monday through Tuesday.
For travelers tonight, especially along I-44 and surrounding highways, caution is key. Slow speeds, safe driving habits, and preparation for limited visibility will help ensure safe passage through the fog.
