Springfield, MO – The National Weather Service in Springfield says the region is nearing its average first freeze date, signaling the seasonal transition into colder weather across southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas.
According to climatology data from the Midwestern Regional Climate Center, the average first 32°F freeze in Springfield occurs around October 22, while areas like Joplin, Rolla, and West Plains typically see their first freeze between October 21 and October 25. Hard freezes of 28°F or lower generally follow in early November.
Forecasters note that while temperatures will cool through the week, the probability of overnight lows reaching freezing remains low (10% or less). However, vegetation remains susceptible to frost or freeze impacts as the region continues to transition into late fall.
Residents are encouraged to monitor overnight lows in the coming weeks and prepare to cover plants or bring sensitive vegetation indoors when the first freeze warnings are issued.
