Springfield, Missouri – Warm, dry conditions are raising fire concerns across southwest Missouri today, with elevated fire danger expected mainly along and west of Highway 65 as a dry air mass settles over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, low humidity and above-normal temperatures are creating an environment favorable for rapid fire spread if a blaze starts. Officials warn that grasses and dormant vegetation can ignite easily under these conditions, especially during the afternoon hours when temperatures peak.

The highest risk areas include communities west of Highway 65 such as Bolivar, Stockton, Buffalo, and parts of the western Ozarks. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged except by experienced fire personnel. Even small sparks from equipment, dragging trailer chains, or improperly discarded cigarettes could quickly lead to grass or brush fires.

Residents are urged to avoid activities that produce open flames or sparks, refrain from parking vehicles on dry grass, and secure chains or equipment that could strike pavement. Local fire departments remain on alert due to the potential for fast-moving fires.

Relief is expected later Thursday as rain and thunderstorm chances return, followed by cooler conditions heading into the weekend. Until then, officials stress caution through the day, as elevated fire danger remains in effect across much of southwest Missouri.
