Kansas City, Missouri – A potentially dangerous rain event is set to hit Kansas City and much of western Missouri this evening, with the risk for flash flooding and rapid rises along streams and rivers. Heavy downpours could bring 2 to 4 inches of rain, with isolated totals near 7 inches between 5 and 7 p.m., continuing through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the greatest rainfall threat is centered on the KC Metro and surrounding counties, including areas near Topeka and St. Joseph. A flood watch is in effect, and local officials warn that saturated ground could quickly lead to dangerous flash flooding and impassable roads.

Communities from eastern Kansas to western Missouri should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Major highways including I-70, US-50, and local low-water crossings may see closures if flooding worsens. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel after 5 p.m., monitor local alerts, and move vehicles to higher ground. Charge devices and keep emergency supplies ready in case of power outages or evacuation orders.

This level of heavy summer rain is unusual for late July, raising concerns about repeat flooding in areas hit by storms earlier this season. The risk will persist through Friday morning, with additional advisories possible as new rainfall totals come in.

Warnings remain in effect overnight. Stay alert for updated emergency instructions and be prepared to take action if flooding develops in your area.
