Springfield, MO – Drivers in Springfield face black ice risks Sunday night as temperatures plummet, creating hazardous road conditions. A cold front moving through the region will drop overnight lows to between 11 and 18 degrees, with wind chills nearing zero.

According to the National Weather Service, melted snow and slush are refreezing, increasing the danger of black ice on untreated roads and sidewalks. Key roads, especially in shaded areas and drainage zones, may become slippery. Travelers should exercise caution, particularly on major routes such as I-44 and local streets, where freezing conditions are most likely.

Monday morning will see sunny skies, but the cold persists, with a high of only 28 degrees. Wind chills will remain near 5 degrees, making outdoor activities uncomfortable. By Monday night, temperatures will dip to a low of 14 degrees.

The weather improves slightly mid-week, with a warming trend. Tuesday’s high reaches 37 degrees, and Wednesday climbs further to 42. Nights will remain frigid, with lows in the teens. Thursday and Friday bring more noticeable warmth, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s, along with a 20–50% chance of rain late Friday.

Drivers should monitor local forecasts for updates on potential freezing fog and slick spots throughout the week. Stay prepared with an emergency car kit and avoid late-night travel if possible.
