Springfield, Missouri – Rain and scattered thunderstorms will move into southwest Missouri after 9 p.m. tonight, bringing wet roads and the potential for brief lightning through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, rain chances range from 60 to 90 percent overnight into Friday morning, with storms continuing through around midday Friday. Most areas, including Springfield, Branson, and Joplin, can expect rainfall totals between a trace and 0.25 inches, with isolated spots reaching up to 0.50 inches.

While the overall severe threat remains low, there is about a 5 percent chance of an isolated stronger storm capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters. These storms are expected to be brief but could develop quickly overnight.

Roads may become slick during periods of heavier rain, especially along I-44 and Highway 65 during the early morning commute.

Residents should keep an umbrella handy and remain alert for brief lightning or thunder overnight. Showers will taper off by Friday afternoon, with quieter conditions expected heading into the weekend.
