Kansas City, MO – Temperatures are set to surge to near 88 degrees by mid-afternoon Friday, creating near-critical fire conditions that could spread flames rapidly across dry grasslands in western Missouri and eastern Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, record or near-record highs are likely Friday and could continue into Saturday, with dry air and southwest winds gusting between 15 and 25 mph. These conditions significantly increase the risk of fast-moving grass fires, especially in areas with dormant vegetation.
Communities including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Kirksville, and Sedalia will see well-above-normal temperatures through the weekend, with humidity levels dropping low enough to accelerate fire spread. Open burning is strongly discouraged, and any spark along roadways like I-70, I-35, and U.S. 71 could ignite fires that move quickly.
Emergency officials urge residents to secure trailer chains, avoid outdoor burning, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Fire crews remain on alert as even small fires could escalate quickly under these conditions.
The heat persists through Saturday before a gradual cooldown begins Sunday. Dry weather is expected to continue into early next week, keeping fire concerns elevated.
