Kansas City, Missouri – A volatile stretch of weather is set to unfold by 3 p.m. Friday, with two rounds of severe thunderstorms threatening damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes across Missouri and eastern Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, storms may first develop ahead of a cold front during the mid-afternoon hours, followed by a more organized and potentially stronger line arriving late afternoon into the evening. The highest risk sits in an enhanced zone stretching from St. Joseph through Kansas City toward central Missouri.
Wind gusts up to 70 mph could snap tree limbs and knock out power, especially along the I-70 and I-35 corridors. Large hail, potentially exceeding 1 to 2 inches in diameter, may damage vehicles and roofs. A few tornadoes cannot be ruled out, particularly with early discrete storms before the main line arrives.
Heavy downpours may also lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas around Independence, Lee’s Summit, and Overland Park.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and be ready to act quickly if warnings are issued. Avoid travel during peak storm hours if possible.
Storms are expected to weaken after 10 p.m., but additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve through the night.
