Kansas City, MO – Frost sparkled across windshields early this morning with temperatures holding near 24°F, but the metro is gearing up for a dramatic warm-up. Sunshine will dominate through midweek, sending highs into the mid-50s by Tuesday, before another December cold snap drives readings back below freezing by week’s end.
According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Monday brings a gradual clearing trend and highs near 40°F. South winds strengthen by Tuesday, pulling warmer air across the region and pushing afternoon highs to around 54°F — nearly 30 degrees above this morning’s chill. Skies stay bright, but gusts may reach 20–25 mph, especially along I-70 and I-35, where crosswinds could affect high-profile vehicles.
By Wednesday, highs cool slightly into the low 40s, then temperatures begin their steady descent. A stronger northwest flow Thursday into Friday will pull Arctic air back into Missouri, sending highs into the upper 20s to low 30s with lows dipping near 11°F by early Saturday.
Despite no snow in the short-term outlook, rapid temperature drops could create slick or frosty morning conditions, especially on bridges or untreated side roads. Meteorologists warn that these quick shifts can cause flash freeze spots as melted frost refreezes overnight.
Looking ahead, long-range models suggest another Midwest storm system may emerge between December 11–17, possibly bringing light snow or wintry mix back to Missouri and surrounding states.
