MISSOURI – A restless wind sweeps across the plains this morning as Kansas City braces for a powerful midweek wind event and a sharp December cooldown heading into the weekend. What starts as a mild stretch will quickly shift to below-freezing highs and biting wind chills by Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, gusts could reach 35–45 mph today, with isolated pockets topping 50 mph north of the metro. Drivers along I-70 and I-35 should prepare for crosswind hazards, especially on elevated roadways and open stretches of highway.
Meteorologists note that a cooling trend begins Friday, dropping highs from the low 50s into the 20s by Saturday. By Sunday morning, Kansas City could see lows in the upper teens, with wind chills in the single digits — a full 30° swing in just 48 hours.
Light snow chances remain below 30%, mainly for areas north of the city, though a few flurries could brush northwestern Missouri and northeast Kansas late Saturday. Accumulations, if any, will be light, but slick patches may form as temperatures plunge below freezing Saturday evening.
