St. Louis, Missouri – Residents across Missouri could experience a dramatic weather swing within the next 24 hours as strong thunderstorms arrive Sunday, followed by a rapid temperature crash and even a chance of light snow by early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a powerful cold front will sweep across the region Sunday, triggering strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and heavy rain during the evening and overnight hours. Cities along the Interstate 70 and Interstate 44 corridors, including St. Louis, Columbia, and Jefferson City, may see storms intensify as the front moves east.
Temperatures will fall sharply behind the front. Afternoon highs in the upper 50s to near 70°F Sunday will plunge overnight, with readings dropping 40 to 50 degrees within roughly 24 hours. By Monday morning, much of the region could wake up to temperatures near or below freezing.
As colder air pours in, forecasters say light snow may develop Sunday night into early Monday, especially across northern Missouri and parts of central Illinois. While major accumulation is not expected, brief bursts of snow could create slick spots on bridges and elevated roads during the early commute.
By Monday and Tuesday, highs will struggle to reach the 20s to low 40s, a sharp return to winterlike conditions after the brief spring warmth. Additional advisories may be issued as the cold front and storm system move through the region.
