Springfield, MO – A tornado warning has been issued for Shannon and Oregon counties in south-central Missouri as a radar-confirmed twister moves through the region. The National Weather Service in Springfield issued the alert at 9:52 p.m. CDT Friday, warning of a tornado near Alton, about 12 miles north of Thayer, moving northeast at 50 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm is producing a damaging tornado along with golf ball-sized hail. Residents in the affected areas, including Alton and Greer, are urged to seek shelter immediately.
The tornado poses a severe risk, with potential damage to mobile homes, roofs, windows, and vehicles. Flying debris can be life-threatening, and tree damage is likely. Emergency officials advise residents to move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. Those in mobile homes or vehicles should find substantial shelter without delay.
The warning remains in effect until 10:15 p.m. CDT as the storm continues to track northeast. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts and take all necessary precautions.
