Nevada, MO – A tornado touched down in Vernon County early Wednesday morning, damaging homes and businesses along a nearly 17-mile path from southwest of Moundville to northwest of Walker.
The National Weather Service in Springfield reported that the EF-1 tornado struck between 7:32 a.m. and 7:44 a.m., packing peak winds of 98 mph. Officials say eight train cars were knocked off the tracks, multiple trees were uprooted or snapped, and at least a few homes sustained roof damage.
According to the NWS survey released Wednesday afternoon, the tornado carved a 16.89-mile path at a maximum width of 600 yards. Although the storm caused structural damage and business disruptions, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The tornado followed a northeasterly path through mostly rural areas, impacting the towns of Moundville, Nevada, and areas northwest of Walker. Emergency crews responded quickly to clear debris and restore access to affected areas. Photos from the scene show scattered debris fields, downed trees, and damaged commercial buildings.
The storm is a reminder of Missouri’s spring severe weather season, which typically peaks in April and May. Officials are urging residents to review safety plans and stay alert to future weather warnings.
The NWS continues to monitor the region and assess potential for additional storm activity through the week.
