Springfield, Mo. – Strong storms could sweep across parts of Missouri tonight, bringing the threat of damaging winds, heavy rain, and possible flash flooding. The National Weather Service says scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected from southeast Kansas into west-central and central Missouri through the evening, with the strongest storms capable of producing wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storm chances range from 20% to 40%, but even isolated storms could be intense. Forecasters warn that repeated rounds of rainfall in the same locations may cause localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Cities including Springfield, Sedalia, and Jefferson City may see impacts to travel and outdoor plans. Motorists should watch for water-covered roads and be prepared for sudden gusty winds that could down tree limbs or power lines. The NWS advises residents to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices in case of outages, and keep umbrellas or rain gear handy.

Thunderstorm chances will taper off late tonight, but unsettled weather could return early next week. Additional watches or warnings may be issued if storms strengthen.
