Howardville, Missouri – A 2.8 magnitude earthquake struck near I-55 just west of the Mississippi River early Monday morning, briefly shaking parts of southeast Missouri near the Tennessee border.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 8 a.m. Monday about 4 kilometers west-southwest of Howardville at a depth of 8.8 kilometers. The epicenter sits within a rural stretch of New Madrid County, not far from the I-55 corridor and communities that frequently monitor seismic activity tied to the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

While a magnitude 2.8 quake is considered minor and typically causes no structural damage, residents near Howardville, Marston and Caruthersville may have felt a short, sharp jolt. Light shaking can also extend across the Mississippi River into western Tennessee, depending on soil conditions.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone, which runs through southeast Missouri into northeastern Arkansas and western Tennessee, remains one of the most active seismic areas east of the Rockies. Small quakes occur periodically, though many go unnoticed.

Emergency managers reported no immediate damage or injuries following Monday’s tremor. Traffic along I-55 continued without disruption, and no roadway inspections were required as of late morning.

Seismologists encourage residents to review earthquake safety plans, including securing heavy furniture and knowing safe shelter spots inside homes and workplaces. Even minor quakes serve as reminders that stronger shaking is possible in the region.

Officials will continue monitoring for aftershocks, though none were immediately reported.
