Memphis, Tenn. – An unrelenting heat wave is baking the Mid-South this weekend, with heat index values soaring to 110°F in parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri. Dangerous temperatures will persist through 9 p.m. Saturday, followed by another round of intense heat expected on Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until Saturday evening, with a Heat Advisory taking over from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. The alert covers cities like Memphis, Jonesboro, West Memphis, Blytheville, Kennett, and Dyersburg.
In these areas, prolonged outdoor exposure could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for vulnerable groups. Local emergency services urge residents to limit activity, hydrate frequently, and check on neighbors, particularly the elderly.
Cooling centers remain open in several counties, including Crittenden and Lauderdale. Air-conditioned shelters and public libraries are also available as refuge during peak afternoon hours. Outdoor work should be rescheduled where possible, and pets must be kept out of the sun.
The extreme heat is part of a larger dome affecting much of the South, with little relief expected until early next week.
Heat advisories remain in place through Sunday evening, with additional alerts possible if the heat persists.
