Dangerous heat continues to grip Missouri this week, with extreme heat warnings in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday. In Kansas City, temperatures are forecast to reach highs of 97°F by Tuesday, July 22nd, with heat indices soaring above 105°F. This prolonged stretch of intense heat poses significant health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents are urged to take extra precautions, especially during outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service, heat indices across Kansas City could reach a suffocating 107°F by Tuesday afternoon. Overnight temperatures will struggle to dip below 75°F, preventing the area from cooling down. The combination of high humidity and extreme heat can cause heat-related illnesses quickly, making it critical to monitor symptoms like dizziness, excessive sweating, and nausea.

Travelers, especially those commuting along major routes like Interstate 70 and Interstate 35, should prepare for discomfort on the roads. The heat can make long drives exhausting, and cars may overheat quickly under the intense sun. If possible, limit travel during the hottest parts of the day.

In addition to these health risks, scattered thunderstorms are expected to provide some temporary relief on Monday and Tuesday, but they won’t last long. These storms may lead to brief flooding in central and eastern parts of Missouri.

For the week ahead, the heat will persist, with high temperatures likely exceeding 95°F through Thursday. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and check on elderly neighbors. Local cooling centers are open to provide refuge from the heat, and power outages may occur if the demand for air conditioning increases.
