Kansas City, Missouri – A sweltering Sunday is on the way for Missouri, as dangerous heat and scattered thunderstorms descend on the Kansas City metro July 20. Heat index values could spike to 105° by mid-afternoon, prompting health officials to urge residents to avoid extended outdoor activity.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Sunday’s high will climb near 96° with a heat index over 100° beginning around 1 p.m. A slight chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms could bring brief relief but may also disrupt travel on I-70 and local roadways during late-day return traffic.

Sunday night will stay warm and humid, with a low around 78°. Thunderstorm chances rise again after 1 a.m., but rainfall will likely remain light.

What’s Ahead:

  • Monday: Hot and dry, high near 97°, with gusts up to 20 mph.
  • Tuesday: Mostly clear and hotter, high of 98° — potentially the hottest day of the week.
  • Wednesday: Sunny and near 99°, staying dangerously warm overnight.
  • Thursday: Highs hold near 98°, with lows struggling to fall below 77°.
  • Friday: Slightly cooler, sunny with a high near 95°.
