St. Louis, Missouri – Residents from Franklin to St. Charles counties should brace for damaging winds and large hail as a fast-moving severe thunderstorm sweeps across east-central Missouri Friday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 2:45 p.m. CDT for central Franklin, southwestern St. Charles, and southeastern Warren counties. The storm, located near Beaufort at 2:17 p.m., is moving northeast at 55 mph with radar-indicated wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as half dollars (1.25 inches).
Communities in the storm’s path include O’Fallon, Wentzville, Union, Pacific, Wildwood, Washington, and New Haven. Wind damage to trees, roofs, and siding is possible. Motorists along Interstate 70 (exits 209–214) and Interstate 44 (exits 251–257) should expect reduced visibility and possible debris on the roadway.
Officials urge residents to take shelter in a sturdy building and stay away from windows. Hail can damage vehicles, and falling limbs may knock out power. A Tornado Watch remains in effect for the region through 7 p.m. CDT.
