St. Joseph, Mo. – Overnight thunderstorms dropped up to 6 inches of rain across parts of northern Missouri and southeast Nebraska, prompting early morning flood advisories and minor flooding in low-lying areas through 9 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City and Omaha, advisories remain in effect until 7 a.m. in northwest Missouri and until 9 a.m. in Richardson and Nemaha Counties, Nebraska. Doppler radar confirmed that intense rainfall triggered localized flooding, particularly around St. Joseph, Maryville, and Brownville.
In Missouri, impacted areas include Atchison, Gentry, Holt, and Harrison counties, with water pooling on roads near Savannah, Tarkio, and King City. Nebraska’s Richardson County is experiencing rising water levels near Indian Cave State Park and Brownville State Recreation Area, where poor drainage has compounded storm runoff.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded routes and heed “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” warnings. Low-lying roads, especially near creeks and rural highways, may remain impassable for several hours. Emergency responders recommend delaying non-essential travel and checking conditions before heading out.
Rainfall is expected to taper off by mid-morning, but additional advisories may be issued if water levels remain elevated.
