Paducah, KY – A dramatic change in weather is expected across western Kentucky today as a powerful cold front brings strong winds, severe thunderstorms, and a rapid temperature drop tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah.

Meteorologists say gusty winds of 35 to 50 mph will develop throughout the day ahead of the approaching cold front, prompting a Wind Advisory for the region.

Severe Storm Threat

Severe thunderstorms could develop late this afternoon into the evening as the cold front pushes east.

Storm timing across the region is expected to be:

  • 3 PM – 6 PM: Western areas near southeast Missouri
  • 6 PM – 9 PM: Western Kentucky including Paducah
  • 9 PM – Midnight: Areas farther east

Forecasters say all severe weather hazards are possible, including:

  • Damaging winds
  • Large hail
  • Possible tornadoes

Rapid Temperature Drop

After the storms move through, much colder air will quickly spread into the region.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing overnight, which could cause rain to briefly change to light snow before ending.

While snowfall amounts are expected to be light, a dusting on grassy surfaces is possible, and isolated slick spots could develop on roads.

Much Colder Early Week

Cold weather will continue through early this week.

Forecasters say single-digit wind chills are possible Monday night into Tuesday morning, making it feel extremely cold across the region.

What Residents Should Do

The National Weather Service recommends residents prepare for rapidly changing conditions:

  • Stay alert for severe weather warnings
  • Secure loose outdoor items due to strong winds
  • Use caution while driving tonight if temperatures drop quickly
  • Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts

Meteorologists say today’s weather could bring multiple hazards within just a few hours, highlighting the importance of staying weather aware as the system moves through.
