Paducah, KY – An extreme heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT Saturday for much of southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri, with heat index values soaring up to 106 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, dangerously hot and humid conditions are increasing the risk of heat-related illness across cities including Cairo, Mayfield, Murray, and Poplar Bluff. The warning spans 15 counties, stretching from Alexander County, IL, through Graves County, KY, down to New Madrid, MO.

Residents are urged to stay indoors if possible, limit outdoor activity to early morning or evening, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks for those working outdoors and immediate action if signs of heat stroke—such as confusion or unconsciousness—occur.

Utilities may see a spike in demand as air conditioning use surges. Vulnerable populations, including children and seniors, are at highest risk. Officials stress never to leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a short time.

Relief is expected after sunset, but temperatures will remain elevated into Sunday. Additional heat advisories may follow if conditions persist.
