Springfield, MO – Residents across southeast Kansas and western Missouri should prepare for a potentially dangerous round of storms on Tuesday, September 23, as severe weather is expected to develop around sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the primary risks early Tuesday will be damaging straight-line winds, with gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour. By the afternoon, hail up to the size of quarters is expected to become an additional hazard.
Forecasters also note a small but notable tornado risk, particularly across far southwest Missouri during the afternoon hours. The strongest storms are expected to move eastward through the day, impacting morning commuters and afternoon travelers alike.
The Storm Prediction Center’s outlook highlights much of southern Missouri and southeastern Kansas in a slight to enhanced risk category, meaning scattered severe storms are likely. Heavy rain could also reduce visibility and lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Officials urge residents to review severe weather safety plans, charge electronic devices, and remain weather-aware throughout the day. Outdoor activities and travel may be disrupted by shifting storm conditions.
“Even one severe thunderstorm can cause significant damage or power outages,” the NWS warned in its Monday update.
