Kansas City, MO – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to disrupt travel and outdoor plans across the Kansas City metro Monday, with flash flooding possible in low-lying areas and along creeks. The National Weather Service has extended a Flood Watch through Monday night for much of western Missouri and eastern Kansas, including Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Johnson counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, multiple rounds of storms could produce rainfall amounts over an inch, with locally higher totals in slow-moving cells. Areas near the Missouri River, Brush Creek, and low-lying neighborhoods could see rapid water rises, making some roads impassable. Commuters should allow extra time and avoid driving through flooded intersections.
Monday’s storms may be accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, particularly during the afternoon and early evening. The heaviest rain is expected in the morning and again during the late afternoon rush hour, raising the risk for delays and power outages.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, keep devices charged, and monitor alerts in case a Flash Flood Warning is issued. The unsettled pattern will persist into Tuesday, though storms should be more scattered.
