KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Residents across eastern Kansas and much of Missouri should prepare for the potential of flash flooding late tonight through Monday morning as a stalled weather front triggers repeated rounds of heavy rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, the Flood Watch covers a wide swath from Atchison and Johnson counties in Kansas to Buchanan, Clay, Jackson, and Lafayette counties in Missouri, as well as northern Missouri counties from Nodaway to Adair. Forecasters warn that saturated ground from earlier rains will make the region more vulnerable to flooding, with creeks, rivers, and low-lying areas most at risk.
Storms are expected to develop this evening and persist in waves through Sunday night. Locations that receive multiple downpours could see rapid water rises, making some roads impassable. Drivers are urged to never attempt to cross flooded roadways and to monitor alerts in case Flash Flood Warnings are issued.
By Monday morning, rain chances should taper off as the front shifts, but additional watches or warnings remain possible if storms redevelop.
