Missouri – Warm wind sweeps across Kansas City this afternoon, drying out grass and pushing temperatures toward summer-like levels as fire danger quietly builds across the metro.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, highs reach 87°F today under full sun, with dry air and light winds creating conditions favorable for fire spread. The concern intensifies into Saturday, when temperatures climb near 90°F and southwest winds increase, with gusts up to 22 mph.

This combination of heat, wind, and low humidity places areas along I-70, I-35, and surrounding counties in a heightened fire risk zone. Even small sparks can spread quickly across dry fields and roadside vegetation. Avoid outdoor burning and secure trailer chains that could throw sparks.

Across Jackson, Wyandotte, and Johnson counties, the warm and dry stretch continues through the weekend. Sunday brings a shift, with highs dropping to 77°F as winds turn and cooler air begins moving in. That transition becomes more noticeable by early Monday.

Temperatures fall sharply to around 41°F by Monday morning, with daytime highs only reaching near 60°F. This rapid cooldown may not bring ice, but it will change how roads and surfaces feel after the weekend warmth.

By Tuesday, temperatures rebound slightly into the mid-60s with partly sunny skies, signaling a more typical spring pattern returning.

If you’re outdoors today, stay aware of fire risks and changing conditions. Are you seeing dry fields or smoky conditions near your area?
