Missouri – Loose trash cans rattle along sidewalks across the Kansas City metro this morning as a powerful storm system sweeps through the central Plains. Winds will quickly strengthen today, creating difficult travel and rapidly changing conditions across the region.
Temperatures sit near 63°F early this morning in Kansas City, with calm winds for now. That quiet start will not last long.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Wind Advisory begins at 10 a.m. and continues through noon Monday across much of western Missouri and eastern Kansas.
Northwest winds will rapidly increase late this morning. Sustained winds may reach 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph expected through the afternoon and evening.
Drivers along Interstates 70, 35, and 435 should prepare for sudden crosswinds, especially on elevated bridges and open highways.
Forecasters say a powerful cold front will sweep through later today. Rain showers may briefly develop before temperatures quickly fall.
As colder air rushes into the region tonight, snow showers and brief snow squalls may develop. These bursts could reduce visibility quickly across the Kansas City metro.
Even a light dusting of snow combined with strong winds may create slick spots and blowing snow on area roads.
By Monday morning, skies begin clearing but bitter air remains. Wind chills could fall below zero, unusually cold for mid-March.
The cold snap will be short-lived. Temperatures rebound quickly into the week as spring warmth returns.
