Kansas City, Mo. – Slippery roads will develop across northern Missouri and northeast Kansas by late afternoon, with snow and a light glaze of ice spreading in as early as 3 p.m. and intensifying through the overnight hours before the Monday commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. CST Monday for northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas, including Buchanan, Andrew, Holt, Nodaway, Atchison KS and Doniphan counties. Advisories expand south and east from 6 p.m. through 9 a.m. Monday for areas including Kirksville, Chillicothe, Moberly and Macon. Snow totals will reach up to 1 inch, with a light glaze of ice possible in some locations.
The greatest travel impacts are expected along I-29 near St. Joseph, U.S. 36 from Cameron to Chillicothe, and rural highways across Gentry, Harrison and Daviess counties. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first as temperatures drop below 32 degrees after sunset.
MoDOT and KDOT urge drivers to reduce speed and check traveler.modot.org or call 511 in Kansas for updated road conditions. Even minor ice accumulation can create spinouts on untreated secondary roads.
Precipitation tapers early Monday, but slick spots may linger through mid-morning. Additional advisories could follow if ice becomes more widespread overnight.
