Kansas City, MO – A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for parts of Missouri and Kansas until 7 p.m. Friday as storms continue to move through the region.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill and Springfield, the watch covers 42 counties, including major population centers such as Kansas City, St. Joseph, Independence, Joplin, and Springfield in Missouri, as well as Olathe, Overland Park, Leavenworth, and Pittsburg in Kansas. The affected area spans across east-central, northeast, and southeast Kansas and north-central, northwest, southwest, and west-central Missouri.

The NWS warns that these storms could produce damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall, leading to localized flooding. Residents are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and be prepared to seek shelter if a warning is issued.

Cities included in the watch area should expect thunderstorms throughout the evening. Travel may be impacted due to heavy rain and potential storm damage. Emergency management officials recommend securing outdoor objects, avoiding unnecessary travel, and staying indoors during severe weather.

The storm system is expected to weaken as it moves eastward later Friday night, but additional weather alerts may be issued if conditions worsen. Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and have multiple ways to receive emergency notifications.
