Kansas City, MO – A relentless stretch of extreme heat will grip the Kansas City metro and much of central Missouri through 7 p.m. Thursday, with dangerously high heat index values pushing up to 110°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for dozens of counties across east-central Kansas and north-central Missouri. Overnight lows could remain in the upper 70s, offering little relief and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Major cities including Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Sedalia, Warrensburg, and Moberly are under the warning. Vulnerable groups—like seniors, young children, and outdoor workers—face heightened danger. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors, drink water frequently, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially in the afternoon.
Public cooling centers are open across the metro area. Officials recommend checking on neighbors and ensuring pets have adequate shade and water. Prolonged exposure may lead to heat exhaustion or even stroke, especially without proper precautions.
The heat dome will persist until Thursday evening, but conditions may prompt additional advisories if temperatures intensify further.
