Kansas City, Missouri – Torrential downpours could flood roads and low-lying areas across northern Missouri and far northeast Kansas through late Friday night, as a Flood Watch remains in effect for over a dozen counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, widespread rain totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with isolated areas possibly exceeding 5 inches. Thunderstorms will continue into Friday morning with more storms likely developing by late afternoon, raising the risk of flash flooding.

Communities from St. Joseph and Maryville to Kirksville and Unionville are in the path of this prolonged rain event. Urban flooding is a key concern, especially in areas with poor drainage or along creeks and streams that may quickly overflow.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through high water, especially after dark. Prepare now by moving valuables off basement floors, checking sump pumps, and staying alert to future flood warnings.

The Flood Watch extends through at least midnight Friday, and further advisories may be issued depending on storm development.
