Kansas City, Missouri – Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding across parts of Kansas and Missouri through Monday afternoon, putting urban streets, small streams, and low-water crossings at risk during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for more than 40 counties, including Jackson, Johnson, Clay, Buchanan, and Atchison in Missouri and Johnson, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, and Miami in Kansas. Many of these areas already picked up 1 to 3 inches of rain Sunday, with another 2 to 3 inches possible overnight.
Flooding is most likely in poorly drained city streets and rural areas where creeks and streams could quickly overflow. In Kansas City, Overland Park, St. Joseph, and Olathe, drivers are urged to avoid low-lying roads and watch for water over pavement.
Residents should prepare now by moving valuables to higher ground and avoiding non-essential travel overnight. If you live near a flood-prone area, keep phones charged and have a plan to evacuate quickly if needed.
More rain is expected Monday morning before tapering off by afternoon. Additional flood warnings may be issued overnight.
