Springfield, Missouri – A wave of dangerous heat will settle over southwest Missouri and southeast Kansas beginning noon Saturday, sending heat index values soaring as high as 106° and triggering an Extreme Heat Warning for dozens of counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the warning covers Springfield, Joplin, Rolla, and Fort Scott through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Extended high temperatures and relentless humidity will sharply increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for those without access to air conditioning.
Residents in Greene, Jasper, Barton, and Polk counties, as well as areas across the Ozarks, should limit outdoor activities, check on elderly neighbors, and be alert for symptoms of heat-related illness. Local agencies stress the importance of drinking water, wearing light clothing, and seeking shade or indoor cooling. City parks, pools, and community centers may offer cooling stations, but residents should monitor updates for location changes or hours.
Never leave children or pets in cars, even briefly, as interiors can become deadly in minutes. If working outside, take frequent breaks and reschedule strenuous tasks for early morning or evening hours.
The Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Wednesday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if high temperatures continue into late week
