Springfield, Mo. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to roll across western Missouri and southeast Kansas this afternoon, bringing the threat of heavy rain and wind gusts up to 50 mph. Afternoon highs will climb into the upper 80s and low 90s before storms move through.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the greatest storm risk will occur from mid-afternoon through early evening, with coverage highest along and west of U.S. 65. Areas including Nevada, Pittsburg, and Warsaw could see a 60–80% chance of storms. Some cells may produce brief downpours capable of reducing visibility for drivers.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roads, and monitor weather alerts. While storms are expected to weaken after sunset, isolated showers could continue past 9 p.m., mainly in the west.
Overnight lows will drop into the upper 60s to low 70s, offering some relief from daytime heat. Additional thunderstorm chances may return midweek as another system approaches.
