Kansas City, Missouri – The first prolonged heatwave of the season will bring dangerously high temperatures to Missouri and Kansas starting Friday, with heat index values reaching 100 to 105 degrees. Residents should prepare for minimal relief overnight as lows remain in the mid-70s, making it difficult for the body to acclimate.
According to the US National Weather Service Kansas City Missouri, temperatures in the 90s are expected from Friday through early next week, with the hottest conditions arriving over the weekend. Heat-related illnesses are a significant concern, especially during this early season heat before people have adjusted to the warmer weather.
Cities like Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Sedalia in Missouri could see heat index values between 101 and 105 degrees on Friday and Saturday. Across the border in Kansas, Topeka and Ottawa are also projected to hit 105 to 106 degrees. This dangerous heat can lead to quick dehydration and heat exhaustion. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks if outdoors, and check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those without air conditioning.
This weekend’s heat marks the first significant hot spell of the year, similar to early summer heatwaves seen in 2021. Authorities urge residents to avoid non-essential outdoor activities during peak heat hours and to charge electronic devices in case of power interruptions from increased energy demand.
Dangerous heat conditions are expected to persist through Saturday. Further advisories may be issued as the extended heatwave continues into next week.
