Missouri wakes up under steel-gray skies and biting air this morning.
Breath hangs in the air. Pavement feels stiff and dry now, but change is coming fast.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning across eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois. Wind chills have dropped as low as 15 below zero, creating dangerous exposure conditions. By tonight, attention shifts from cold to snow.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the St. Louis metro beginning around midnight and lasting through Sunday evening. Snow develops steadily overnight and intensifies through Sunday. Accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected across much of the region.
Travel may quickly become difficult to impossible. Roads like I-70, I-64, I-55, and I-270 could turn snow-packed as snowfall rates increase. Visibility drops during heavier bands, especially Sunday morning and afternoon. If you must travel, plan extra time and carry emergency supplies.
Cold air stays locked in behind the storm. Highs Sunday struggle to reach the mid-teens. Gusty winds push wind chills back into the single digits below zero. Any daytime melting will refreeze quickly after sunset, increasing the risk of flash freezing on untreated roads and sidewalks.
Monday remains cold and quiet. Sunshine returns, but highs hover near 15 degrees. Overnight lows drop close to zero again. Conditions slowly improve midweek as temperatures recover and snow chances fade.
Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook hints at moderating temperatures but continued below-normal cold across the Midwest. For now, conditions may deteriorate rapidly after dark. Limit travel, layer up, and check on neighbors.
